Improve Your Bowling Game: A Guide for Beginners

By Monty | August 10, 2010

Almost everybody loves to bowl. The great thing about bowling is that it can be played by young and old alike and regardless of weather conditions. It’s simply a game that’s fun for everybody, even if you don’t like the special shoes you have to rent at the bowling alley. For most people, however, the game is even more fun when they play it well and get high scores. The fact is, by making a few key changes in your game and practicing these, you can actually improve your score quite a bit.
Making sure that you have a good grip on your ball is very important. A bad grip will lead to loss of control when trying to release the ball after your approach. You may end up lofting the ball, namely it never touches the lane as it flies through the air. There is a chance you could send the ball flying in the complete opposite direction from the lane. You could end up harming yourself! A good hold on the ball depends greatly on having the right size holes, neither too big nor too small. Your ball’s weight can also have an influencing factor and it is vital that you find it agreeable. Some players place insert tape on the holes. Insert tape has a textured surface which gives your thumb something to hang on to. You will gain better control over your ball due to the additional texture which allows for a better grip. Perfecting your approach and figuring out how many steps you will take is another goal you should have. Don’t worry about people who say you have to take a certain number of steps for the best results. Only you can decide what the right number of steps is, because it all depends on you. How tall you are affects the number. The length of your stride is another factor. It is affected by your speed and how hard you toss the ball. It depends on how far away from the throw line you start from. Over many games you will begin to understand where you should start from, how fast you should move, and how many steps you need.
Focusing on the ball also applies to bowling, whether you believe it or not. Of course, you shouldn’t literally just stare at the ball while you are bowling. It implies that you need to keep your attention on the goal, or the pin you intend to hit. Your aim will automatically follow your line of sight, so keeping your goal in focus will make sure that your ball follows. Just like in baseball, you improve your chances of hitting the ball by focusing on it. There are a lot of different techniques to master as you learn how to become a great bowler. Always remember to keep at it. You can prevent frustration from affecting your scores just by relaxing and going with the flow. Consistent practice and keeping a positive mental approach will always do wonders for your game.
